The Rotary Club of Jefferson invites area residents to enjoy Art on the Square this coming Saturday by joining in the Art of Giving.
Art on the Square will be held Oct. 8 from 10 am to 4 pm on the east side of the courthouse in Jefferson. It will feature art by out-of-state and local artists, food trucks, music, and crafts for children. It is organized by Jefferson Matters: Main Street’s Tower View Team. It will be held rain or shine.
Rotarians will be at the event collecting donations of non-perishable food and cash for the Action Resource Center food pantry. Use of the food pantry has increased significantly in the last few months, and the need for food and cash to purchase perishables for distribution is greater than ever.
Local Rotarians are focusing their service efforts on food insecurity this year at the request of Rotary district governor Erna Morain. One in eight Iowans is food insecure, according to Morain, and 360,540 Iowans live at or below the poverty level. They often must choose between buying food or paying for medical care or utilities. That’s why Morain challenged Rotarians to help provide food assistance.
“’Service Above Self’ isn’t just what we say, it’s what we do,” said Tori Riley, volunteer service chair of the Rotary Club of Jefferson. “We hope the community will join us in various projects this year to benefit the ARC food pantry.”
